Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM)

The Automation and Production Technology department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM started R&D work in Stade in September 2010.

In collaboration with industrial partners the department realizes automated assembly for bonding and precision machining of large FRP structures on up to a 1:1 scale. These activities are undertaken at Forschungszentrum CFK NORD (Research Center CFRP North) in a hall having an area of 4000 m² and a height of 25 m.

Frauenhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (IST)

As an innovative R&D partner the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST offers complete solutions in surface engineering which are developed in cooperation with customers from industry and research. The IST’s “product“ is the surface, optimized by modification, patterning, and/or coating for applications in the business units mechanical engineering, tools and automotive technology, aerospace, energy and electronics, optics, and also life science and ecology.

The principle technology units at the IST are

  • atmospheric pressure processes with the main focus on electrochemical processes and atmospheric pressure plasmas processes,
  • low pressure plasma processes with the main focus on magnetron sputtering and highly ionized plasmas and PECVD as well as
  • chemical vapor deposition with the main focus on hot-wire CVD.
  • The center of tribological coatings focusses on the friction reduction, wear and corrosion protection.
  • The Application Center for Plasma and Photonics deals with mobile plasma sources and laser plasma hybrid processes.

The IST’s expertise lies in the ability to control all of the above-mentioned processes and their combination with a great variety of thin films. Extensive experience with thin-film deposition and film applications is complemented by excellent capabilities in surface analysis using the very latest equipment and in simulating vacuum-based processes.

Choosing the optimum combination of process and coating for a particular task is one of the major strengths of the Fraunhofer IST. Besides fundamental research activities in cooperation with universities and research centers, about 120 employees are developing tailored surfaces and processes together with service providers, equipment manufacturers, and coating users from diverse industries. For an efficient technology transfer the IST offers a broad range of services, from development of prototypes and economical product scenarios to upscaling and even implementation of the technology at the customer.

In Europa einzigartig ist mit dem CFK NORD die komplette Ideen- und Produktionskette von CFK vertreten: von der Hochschule im Hansecampus Stade, über das Technologiezentrum CFK Valley Stade Technology, dem Dienstleistungszentrum CFK Valley Stade Service, den Zulieferern am Standort bis zum Einsatz der Bauteile im Stader Airbus-Werk.

DNW - German-Dutch Wind Tunnels

DNW, the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels, was established by the German Aerospace Center DLR and the Dutch Aerospace Center NLR.

DNW is a non-profit foundation under Dutch law, with headquarter in Marknesse in the Netherlands. Its tunnels are situated in a number of locations in the Netherlands and Germany: Marknesse, Amsterdam, Braunschweig, Göttingen and Köln.

DNW operates its own large, low-speed facility and the aeronautical wind tunnels of DLR and NLR. DNW provides solutions for the experimental simulation requirements of aerodynamic research and development projects. These projects can originate in the research community (universities, research establishments or research consortia) or in the course of industrial development of new products. Most of the industrial development projects originate in the aeronautical industry.

5 out of its 10 wind tunnels are located in Niedersachsen:

  • The NWB in Braunschweig is a closed-circuit low speed wind tunnel of the atmospheric type, located on the premises of the DLR.
  • The transonic wind tunnel (TWG) in Göttingen is a facility for research and development tests in the transonic and supersonic domain.
  • The high-pressure wind tunnel (HDG) in Göttingen is a research and development facility for aerodynamic experiments.
  • The cryogenic Rohr wind tunnel (KRG) in Göttingen is a research and development facility for aerodynamic experiments.
  • The Ludwieg tube (RWG) tunnel in Göttingen is a research and development facility for aerodynamic experiments at supersonic and cold hypersonic flow.

Der LeichtbauCampus Die öffentlich-private Partnerschaft Open Hybrid LabFactory wurde im Jahr 2012 unter der Federführung des Niedersächsischen Forschungszentrum Fahrzeugtechnik (NFF) der TU Braunschweig gemeinsam mit den Industriepartnern initiiert.

Im LeichtbauCampus Open Hybrid LabFactory werden großserientaugliche Fertigungs- und Produktionstechnologien für die wirtschaftlich und ökologisch nachhaltige Herstellung hybrider Leichtbaukomponenten aus Metallen, Kunststoffen und textilen Strukturen entwickelt.

The Technische Universität Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and additional partners are bringing together their broad areas of expertise. The Aeronautics Research Centre (NFL) is a joint scientific union of the research institutes of aerospace and aeronautics at TU Braunschweig, the DLR, and Leibnitz University (LU) in Hannover. Its purpose is to:

  • strengthen and integrate the scientific aerospace research at “Braunschweig Research Airport”
  • promote fundamental coordinated research programs of the partners, with the goal of scientific excellence.

This is achieved through:

  • Initiative, planning, and coordination of fundamental interdisciplinary research projects in aerospace,
  • Support in coordinating of long-term research and development strategies as well as in coordinating investments in large-scale research equipment for the partners,
  • Coordination of joint scientific events,
  • Representing the members’ interests in terms of society, industry, and policy-makers.

The IPH conducts application-oriented research in the field of engineering sciences. About 30 research assistants work in interdisciplinary teams on research projects dealing with the core issues process technology, production automation and logistics. Moreover, the IPH also researches on XXL products – for example wind energy plants, ships or conveying technology for the mining industry – and on issues around Industry 4.0.

Objective of the IPH is to recognize new trends at an early stage, advance innovative ideas and help implementing them in industry.
